I love the colours in this. It's a beautiful painting but why is there a fierce looking dog barring its teeth in the bottom left-hand corner?!
That's actually some white on his chin from being an old black dog! Just like the one sleeping at my feet right now! He has his legs on her shoulder affectionately which I've never seen in a painting. It was common however, to portray a pet or animal, in the 18th century to show the sitter's Enlightened connection with nature.

He's a mutt, black lab and possibly Shepard mix.
That IS a beautiful painting! She has a sort of Julia Ormond quality, though more delicately pretty.

@Heather: What do you know about a Reynolds painting of Mrs. Carnac? I have an old litho of this and I cannot find much info at all about her on line. Know of it?
